Photo by Brad Clift of the Hartford (CT) Courant of Rod Sellers using his forearm to bounce Christian Laettner's head off the floor during the Midwest Regional semifinal against Duke in the '90-91 NCAA Tournament. Sellers was suspended on 3/13/92 for UConn's Southeast Regional first-round game against Nebraska in the '91-92 NCAA Tournament (which UConn won 86-65). Sellers returned to the line-up for the next game, a 78-55 loss to Ohio State in the second round.
Sellers disputed a Sports Illustrated passage that quoted him as saying of Duke's Christian Laettner: "I just wanted to kill him, in fact I still do -- if I saw him now I would try to hurt him." Sports Illustrated writer Curry Kirkpatrick later said that he never spoke with Sellers before quoting him in a November, 1991 article, but used a quote obtained by sports writer Anthony Cotton of the Washington Post following UConn's 81-67 loss to Duke March 22 in the Midwest Regional semifinals of the 1991 NCAA Tournament. The quote appeared in the March 29, 1991 edition of the Washington Post in a feature story on Laettner written by Cotton.
