Description
===========

UConn Men's Basketball 2000-01 Schedule in various formats. There are 5 files included:

1) UConnMensBasketball2000-01.pdb - JFile database
   To install, open your HotSynch utility, select "Install Handheld
   File" and drag this file into that window. Requires JFile database
   app for the Palm OS.

2) UConnMensBasketball2000-01 - A DateBook import file - Mac users only!
   This file contains "events" for each game for importing into the Palm
   Desktop software. After importing it these events will be added to
   your Palm during your next HotSynch. The import process doesn't
   appear to support Alarms so you'll need to set you own if you want
   them.

3) UConnMensBasketball2000-01.csv - Comma Separated Value file
   This file can be imported into other Palm database apps
   (like MobileDB). Most database apps provide a utility
   for converting a CSV file into their database format.

4) UConnMensBasketball2000-01.fmp - FileMaker Pro 5.x database
   This is included just in case someone has a use for it.
   Requires FileMaker Pro v5.x or greater.

5) ReadMe-Mac.txt - The document that you are reading if you're a Mac user.

6) ReadMe-PC.txt - The document that you are reading if you're a PC user.

JFile Database File
===================

To install this database, use the PalmPilot installation tool to select the file and then hotsync. Requires JFile database app for the Palm OS.

This is the format of the JFile database file:

Field Name Column Width Field Type
----------  ------------  ----------
Date             42         Date
Day              22         String
L                10         String
Opponent         72         String
Time             36         Time
Site             76         String
TV?              28         String
Comment          70         String
UC               17         Integer
OP               17         Integer

The Date field is an actual date type so if you sort the database by one of the other fields you can always sort on this field to return the database to chronological order.

The "L" field is the Location (Home/Away).

The UC field is an Integer field that you can use to record UConn's score. JFile has a feature that will sum the contents of this field.

The OP field is an Integer field that you can use to record the opponent's score. JFile has a feature that will sum the contents of this field.

I optimized the onscreen layout for my Palm Vx. If you are using another Palm OS device please let me know if there are any problems with the column widths that I have used.

Datebook Import File
====================

The DateBook import file will create an event for each UConn Men's game, plus Midnight Madness and each day of the Big East Tournament in your DateBook app. The events are all set up for 2 hour duration with the exception of the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the Maui Invitational and the 4 rounds of the BE Tournament (the times for those events haven't been determined yet). The time for Midnight Madness is 11:49 PM - 11:59 PM because I could get the import process to handle a time range that ran past midnight *and* there is a minimum 10 minute duration for a timed event. Also, there didn't appear to be a way to import or export an Alarm setting so you'll need to set those yourself for each game if you want a reminder 15 minutes before game time.

Each event has Category 1 set to "UConn Men's Basketball" and Category 2 set to "UConn Basketball". If you want to test this file before importing it into your calendar you can create a new "user" in your Palm Desktop software, name it "UConn Men", make that the active user, and then import my file into that calendar. You will end up with a calendar of just the UConn Men's basketball games.

To import:

1. Launch Palm Desktop
2. Choose Import from the File menu.
3. Locate the "UConnMenBasketball2000-01"import file and select Open.
4. The import dialog box will appear.
5. Specify to which fields to map the import data (you shouldn't have to
   change anything) and click Import.

CSV File
========

This is for those of you who use a database app on your Palm OS device other than JFile. Most database apps that I looked into come with a utility for converting CSV files into their database file format. Note: This file does *not* have the Field Names in the first record so set you're converter's settings aprropriately. If you create a database file for a database app other than JFile please send it to me so that I can make it available to others.

Fishy has used this file to create a MobileDB database file. If you want to use MobileDB you could save yourself some effort by contacting him on The Boneyard <http://www.uconnfan.com/>.

FileMaker Pro File
==================

This is the file that I used to create my JFile database with. The layout is not pretty. It is provided just in case someone would like it.

FAQ
===

1) Why didn't you do the UConn Women's Basketball schedule, too?

   I'm waiting for CPTV to finalize their TV schedule first.

2) Why don't you do the entire Big East basketball schedule?

   I'm thinking about it. I'll probably do a JFile database for it once
   I find the time. I'm not so sure if I'll create a DateBook import
   file, though.

3) Why did you choose JFile for your database app?

   I looked at a bunch of different database programs. JFile's big
   selling point for me was the availability of "FMSync", a Conduit for
   FileMaker Pro & JFile for Macintosh users. Note: FMSync and JFile can
   be purchased bundled together from FMSync for a reduced price.

4) Why is the datebook import file for Mac users only?

   I use a Mac so creating the datebook import file for Mac users was
   easy. I couldn't find a PC user to test it so I included it in my
   intial release of this package. I have since discovered that the Palm
   Desktop software for the PC users a binary format for it's
   import/export files. If someone out there is using a PC and wants to
   generate this file for me I'd be more than happy to include it with
   my other files for PC users with appropriate credit given to that
   person. If you're thinking about doing this contact me first to make
   sure that nobody else has done it already.
