UConn Huskies Basketball

Doron Sheffer '93-96

Played for Galil Elyon in Israel prior to attending UConn. Let them to the Israeli National Championship in 1992-93. He was the MVP of the Israeli Club League in 1992-93 while completing a three-year military obligation. He also led Galil Elyon to the Israeli Cup title in 1991-92. Enrolled at UConn with 3 years of NCAA eligibility.

Selected by the Los Angeles Clippers with their second pick in the 2nd round (36th pick overall) of the 1996 NBA Draft making him the only player in Israeli basketball history to be selected in the NBA draft. Chose to play for Maccabi Tel-Aviv in Israel, where Nadav Henefeld is his teammate, when the Clippers couldn't guarantee him a roster spot or release/trade him to another team.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv made it to the finals of the Euroleague Championship in 2000, only to lose to Panathinaikos (Greece) 73-67. Retired from basketball on June 25, 2000 stating that it was no longer fun for him. Last word was that he was on a trek across Australia and was studying Buddahism and involved in holistic medicine. Participate in Jim Calhoun's Celebrity Classic Charity All-Star Game on August 10, 2002.

Involved in a strange trade on Oct. 29, 2001. The Portland Trailblazers traded Will Purdue and some cash to the LA Clippers in exchange for the rights to Doron. The Clippers immediately released Purdue. Since a team can't just give a player to another team, including Doron's right's gave the Trailblazers a way to get rid of Purdue's salary and free up room under the salary cap. The Clippers apparently had some salary cap room they didn't need so they took the cash from the Trailblazers as compensation for absorbing Purdue's salary for salary cap purposes.

It was reported by Andy Katz that Doron was diagnosed with testicular cancer in early 2002 but following surgery, he was told the cancer had not spread. Rumored to be working toward a comeback, either in Israel or possibly toward another shot at the NBA.
